According to an article on the UK BBC blog, it has never been a better, yet more challenging time for small businesses to get started. This article discusses UK businesses in particular, but the points made also apply to small businesses in Australia.

It is a good time because the playing field is so level on the Internet. However it is also challenging because of the current economic malaise and because running a small business requires such an enormous amount of different skills.

The author of the article says that
